Lucifer Essaaaay
Okay! So trips into Beato's heart got me thinking a bit about Lucifer processes information, and what things he chooses to share, and I thought I would essay a bit about it.
So. Lucifer is like hyper observant. I didn't make it a skill because I honestly don't think I could play him without it. But it's a significant part of his genius. Though Lucifer IS a genius in the conventional sense of 'having a very high IQ', that is not actually relevant to his character. What IS relevant is the way he observes things around him and finds pathways. He is very clear sighted and good at reading people. Despite the fact that he is/is seen as a jackass because of the fact that he tends to point out things most people would let go unsaid, he actually has very little bias- he doesn't tend to see just the bad or just the good people. For example, he realizes that Alexiel is both someone very full of love and very covered in blood, and these aren't at all contradictory to him.
That said, he does tend to interpret reality in a harsher way. But it isn't exactly revolutionary. He believes people tend to do things for themselves, even when they are also doing things for others. He doesn't condemn anyone for this, or really care about their motives most of the time. But, for example, when someone wants to be of use to others, they are choosing to be a tool. Lucifer does not use the word tool as an insult, though it is not something he wants to be. It is merely an observation. If people want to be tools, then of course it is their life and they have that freedom and he doesn't really give a fuck. But what he doesn't understand is refusing to acknowledge it for what it is: If what you want so much is to be useful to others, why do you simultaneously balk at a word which describes that? Clearly your eyes are closed.
This largely isn't a point Lucifer is a hypocrite on. He's very aware of his own situation at all times, KIRA tended to lie about these things to others, but he was aware of them himself. Lucifer is quite a bit more observant and smarter than Kira, so for the most part he is pretty good at admitting to his own situation and feelings and so on. I.E., he is a tool of the Personae at the moment, and he hates that but he has also accepted it for the time being. He has accepted the title of 'friend' from Yukio, and while in a way he means that genuinely, it doesn't come with other titles like 'tool', so he doesn't actually care to be useful to him.
ANYWAY TL;DR, basically Lucifer tends to see things in a harsh realists light but most of what he says does not come with the negative connotations most humans would attach to it, because he really doesn't give a fuck. Saying you are a murderer, for example, is not a judgement. Nor is tool, or even fool. He does not give enough fucks to have any kind of expectations of you which you can disappoint, so if you get upset over his way of see things whatever that is on you, because it was genuinely never an insult to begin with, and again, he doesn't care either way.
MOVING ON. As I said, Lucifer is hyper-observant. However! Since he has always been this way, he considers the things he observes to be self evident. Lucifer sees no point in stating the obvious, so he often doesn't bother to tell people what he thinks unless they either ask or he specifically observes them not understanding. To him explaining WHY he thinks you are a tool or WHY he is certain Beatrice desires romantic love despite appearing to hate it, or WHY you are being hypocritical is pretty much like going up to someone and saying "Hey, the sky is blue". For 99% of what he observes, that's how obvious it is to him. And DESPITE APPEARANCES, Lucifer actually doesn't consider himself superior to everyone, at least not in the sense of 'you couldn't possibly understand what I think', so he tends to assume people are also aware of these very basic things.
What this basically results in is that it often doesn't occur to Lucifer to explain things. I think much of what he thinks, if explained, it becomes obvious that there's nothing personal going on. I thiiiink Lucifer made it pretty clear when talking to Fay. Humans use 'I don't care' as an insult, for Lucifer it is just a fact. And WHY anyone would assume he should care is honestly beyond him. He is perfectly aware that he is capable of caring, as he has memories of it, but so far he doesn't so *shrug*, it's not something he is going to try to force himself to feel, and even once he does it will only be for selective people, not humanity as a whole.
In the heart game this was a problem because the aspect of heart that Lucifer was talking to WANTED TO KNOW HIS THEORIES but... to him there was nothing special enough about his theories to call them that. They were just conclusions he half-reached on minimum information and thus unreliable and of no special interest. Lucifer is interested in facts, not ideas, so he wanted to keep reading to have more facts. However he realized that she solves riddles for the fun of the game, and he solves them to have the information they contain, so to him there is no real entertainment in talking about what might be.
That said! There are things which are NOT self-evident to Lucifer, and these are mostly things he remembers from his human life. Love, family, devotion, self-sacrifice. They do not compute in Lucifer's head, though. Even though he can observe the reaction, he can't exactly identify the cause or recreate it at this point. HE EVENTUALLY WILL, because he is very smart. Even canon Lucifer, who was still a crazy doucheball, understood how people worked in these regards. But it is something he has to learn through observation, and thus right now much of it is still a mystery to him.

Does he understand that it's an insult to 'normal' people, and why? Or does he understand and give no fucks?
